Award Programs
The Foundation works closely with college staff, faculty, administration, and students to identify and support specific needs that enrich the college community and the learning environment.
CLASSIFIED STAFF AWARDS
In 2006, the Peninsula College Foundation established a Classified Staff Award to fund professional development and projects for campus community members in the Classified Staff ranks. The awards have funded such projects as funding attendance in a Multicultural Issues course to further a Classified Staff person's educational journey towards a Masters degree, funded a trainer certification in self defense to offer the course to community members, students and staff at the college. Applications are available in fall quarter and the process is open to any Peninsula College Classified Staff employee.
EXCEPTIONAL FACULTY AWARDS
These awards benefit faculty and continue Peninsula College’s record of excellence in faculty development. The funds are awarded yearly through an application process in the Spring. In 2008, the Peninsula College Foundation awarded the largest amount in Peninsula College's history, $15,000. The funding is provided by earnings from an endowment established by the Foundation and matched by the State Board of Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC). To date the Foundation has awarded funding for such projects as a doctoral degree for two faculty members, transportation costs for summer study class to London, Berlin, Prague and Vienna with 14 Peninsula College students and community members. They have funded research exhibits through University of Florida’s Latin American Collection and visits to museums and galleries featuring exhibits on Latin American and Caribbean women artists for development of new course offerings at the college, to fund research, advertising and production of a yearlong public lecture series in East Jefferson County by ten significant “thinkers” of the modern era.
FALL and SPRING GRANTS
Each year the Peninsula College Foundation Board establishes an amount of funds to make available to members of the Peninsula College campus and extension site communities for grants to enhance the College’s ability to fulfill its mission. All full-time and annualized associate faculty and full-time staff will be eligible to apply for Foundation grants. Projects funded through the grant process vary from funding a Family Fun Science Night open to grammar school age children and their families to nurture and encourage their interest in science, funding an alternative energy automobile, hosting of First Amendment Day on the college campus where high school and college students to hear prominent speakers from across the Pacific Northwest and powerful photojournalistic images from around the world via Pictures of the Year International exhibit and funding replacement of three desk top computers with laptop computers and build a wireless intranet in the Auto Shop for student and instructor flexibility and to provide teaching tools for emerging skills needed in the industry. Applications for these grants can be requested by contacting the Foundation at (360) 417-6535. Foundation grant funds will not supplant funds in the College’s operating budget.
STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
A growing number of scholarships have been made available by generous gifts from individual donors. Students unable to meet college expenses through family or personal resources can begin an enrichment program through these special gifts. Descriptions of existing scholarship funds and eligibility requirements are available in the Scholarship Funds section of this website. If you would like to establish a scholarship for a particular program and/or in the name or in memoriam of a loved one, please contact the Foundation at (360) 417-6535. More information about Student Scholarships can be found in the "Financial Aid" section of the Peninsula College website or by contacting the Foundation at (360) 417-6535.
STUDENT EMERGENCY LOAN FUNDS
Students in need assistance for tuition, books and supplies or are waiting for grants and scholarships through the Financial Aid Office may need immediate funds. The Orkney Emergency Loan Fund is available for these special purposes. The recipient must repay the loan within the current quarter from the awarded grant or scholarship so the fund can continue to help future students.
More information about Orkney Emergency Student Loan Funds can be found in the Scholarship Funds section of the website, or by contacting the Foundation at (360) 417-6535.
ATHLETIC PROGRAMS
Peninsula College athletes represent the college in the northern region of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges. Through Foundation gifts, the Peninsula College Boosters provide approximately one-third of the financial support needed to maintain the Peninsula College Athletic Program, and assist student athletes with a portion of their tuition needs.
